Foundational Beliefs - What we believe at citywestchurch
Prayer is simply communing with God, where we listen, talk, share feelings and allow our whole life to be in an intimate relationship with him. Praying is often just as much about listening as it is about talking.
This could include times of silence, time of singing, proclaiming and asking for the will of God to be done. There is not just one way to pray but we do know prayer is important for the individual and it is important for the body of Christ.
The word of God does give us some great examples of prayer and teaches us to lean into relationship with God.
A Call to Prayer
Here at citywestchurch we desire to see all that God has purposed for our church, city, loved ones and YOU! As a team we believe a prophetic shift is happening now in this season and therefore we need to re-position ourselves to be like the New Testament church. Every believer is empowered and called to be a minister of the gospel. Every believer can pray and hear from the Holy Spirit. God is awakening his church.
Jesus Said to his disciples “When you pray” (Mathew 6:5) This indicates that Jesus expected his disciples to pray, which means we also need to pray as we are also his disciples.
It is a strong suggestion, also it was an un-written expectation built into Jewish culture who naturally spoke with God. This unfortunately is not built into Kiwi culture or even into NZ Christian culture. So, we need to intentionally make prayer a priority and develop a love for his presence.
When Should we Pray?
The answer to this question is clear when we look to the Bible, and here at citywestchurch this is what we strive to do too – praying all the time, in all circumstances and occasions, giving thanks to God, and continually lifting up God’s people to him.
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people” Ephesians 6:18
How Should we Pray?
“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Mathew 6:6
Jesus taught us to get alone with him to pray and as we do this, we reap his rewards. Yes, we will be rewarded for what is done in the secret place.
I would encourage you talk with Jesus, allow the Holly Spirit to train you to listen, to hear and to obey.
