Making Space for Series 2024

Sunday Morning’s message 21st of January 2024

Pastor David Jones

Objective:

Encourage everyone in the group to hunger for more of the Holy Spirit. Where in their own life, they can make space for the more of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps remove some of the clutter of life for more of the Holy Spirit.

Leaders Note:

Encourage people to hunger for more of the Holy Spirit, the revealer of Jesus, the comforter, the guide, the giver of power for the gospel. Remember the Holy Spirit is not “it” or a “force”. The Holy Spirit is personal and the third person of the God Head. We can walk and talk with him. Leave time during the evening to pray for each other, allow the presence of the Holy Spirit to fill the room and touch hearts. This is a massive subject. Please choose what best suits your group.

Discussion:

Why did Jesus leave us the Holy Spirit and is being filled with the Holy Spirit still relevant today?

Answer – Yes, being filled with the Holy Spirit is more than relevant today. In fact, it is imperative as a believer to be filled. We are going to look at just one aspect of the Holy Spirit being in us.

The Gift of Speaking in Personal Tongues:

Read:

Acts 2:1 – 4 - " When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them"

On this day the promise of the Holy Spirit arrived.

Who received the Holy Spirit and how many people received him?

What happened when the Holy Spirit came upon them?

Answers – All were filled, every person and they ALL spoke in other tongues.

Question and Discussion:

Can all believers speak in the gift of tongues for personal edification?

Leaders note:

Distinguish the difference between tongues and interpretation (this is for the whole body of Christ 1 Cor 12) and personal tongues (this is for the individual's edification.)

Answer – Yes speaking in tongues is for all Spirit filled believers.

Read and Discuss:

Leader- Choose one or two to focus on.

1 Cor 14:4 “Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church”

Strong point personal edification

1 Cor 14:18 “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you”

Paul wrote this many years later after the day of Pentecost.

1 Cor 14:39 - 40 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

1 Cor 12:31 “…….Now eagerly desire the greater gifts”

Conclusion

Question – What happens when we speak in tongues?

Read and discuss scripture - Romans 8:26-28

Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Answers - The two intercedes. First intercede - Help us overcome the flesh (sin man) Second intercede - Brings about God’s will for our lives.

Application:

This week make space for the Holy Spirit. Allow some time to sit with the Holy Spirit to listen and be freshly filled. Also increase speaking in tongues in your prayer time. Speaking in tongues can be done anywhere, but this is for you. So, bear in mind that non-believers' others cannot understand.
