Mentoring Others: Why Mentor?

Updated: Aug 15

Part 1 of 4

Jesus instructed us to give our lives to passing on the baton.

Matthew 28: 19 – 20

"19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

When you study the life of Jesus, you can see clearly that mentoring was Jesus’s method of releasing the next generation to proclaim the gospel. Jesus spent approximately 51% of His ministry time with the public and 49% with the twelve disciples.

Jesus spent His ministry life mentoring future leaders. When Jesus ascended to heaven His kingdom extension did not stop, it lived on through the disciple filled with the Holy Spirit. When we mentor people well, we’re cooperating with God in fulfilling Matthew 28:19 –20.

Effective leaders choose to make mentoring a priority even amid everything else they do.

Taking time to mentor someone simply says “We love you and believe in you” - people know when someone really believes in them. When you believe in people, you motivate them and release their potential

DEFINITION OF MENTORING:

‘Dynamic intentional relationship of trust. One person enables another to maximise the grace of God in their life of service. A mentor is a disciple who disciples another.

Mentors who mentor like Jesus’ love to watch their mentees go beyond themselves - to do greater things than they have done.
