Let us consider the aspect of team from a Christian perspective. Effective teamwork is a reflection and natural flow from being part of Christs spiritual family The key is keeping Jesus as the head of the body. As we equip ourselves for mature service, let's look at what sets a Jesus-centred team apart from worldly teams.
What does a Jesus Team Look Like?
The Jesus team is founded on real relationships, and we function as a spiritual family. It is not a team of convenience, as other worldly teams are; rather, it includes trust, shared labour, unity, inclusiveness, and a heart of a servant.
Trust
Proverbs 28:25
"The greedy stir up conflict, but those who trust in the LORD will prosper."
Trust is foundational in any team. It starts with trusting God and extends to trusting each other. In a spiritual family, trust means believing in each other's commitment and character-even when misunderstandings arise. If you have problems with trust, revisit how you perceive God as trustworthy and his faithfulness to you. Many times, your ability to trust others starts with your trust in God.
Proverbs 3:5–6 “
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Shared Effort
Romans 14:19,
"Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification."
It takes work to be a team. Just as every player's energy is required for a rugby scrum to work, so, too, a Jesus team is at its best when everyone is fully invested in and working toward the common goal of extending God's Kingdom. God has given every person talents, gifts and strengths. Consider how you can become more engaged and find your place in serving one another.
Achieving Much Together (Unity)
Genesis 11:6: The story of the Tower of Babel is a demonstration of what can be achieved with combined initiative, vision and a common goal. The people accomplished much because they were working together toward a common goal. Even though their motivations were totally misguided. When we share a common heart, goal and vision in the name of God, remarkable things can be done for His Kingdom. A Jesus team is open to including others and places high value on the contribution of every individual. We honour genuine friendships and walking life out together, not just doing or being enough to complete the task. Real discipleship is done journeying together.
Servant Hearted
Philippians 2:5-7: In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus […]
A Jesus team serves at its core, just as Jesus served us, so too are we called to serve one another in selfless ways. Our heart is that people in teams would be released at citywest into their God-given destiny; we are a big family, really, and not just a church on the hill. Trust, effort, unity, inclusiveness, and servanthood underpin our teamwork as we mirror and continue to become like Jesus.
"It takes two flints to make a fire." Let's be those flints-working together to light a fire through our unity and commitment to the Father and each other. May this fire spread and touch our community.
